Sycamore GapJohn Thomason
00:00 / 06:36

Friends, Romans, countrymen,

Mission to civilize,

Carried their eagle north,

Never came home.

Legionaries lost in the

Mist and the mire on the

Last of the roads that

Lead away from Rome.

Myth and reality,

Fiction and fact,

Echoing down through the Sycamore Gap.

Turbulent surnames,

Pele towers, blood feuds,

No peace on the Borders

For the reiver clans.

Armstrongs and Grahams

On the moors, in the marches

Drive cattle across

The Debatable Lands.

Hard-men in hard times,

Forward and back,

Echoing down through the Sycamore Gap.

Something quite spiritual,

Vegetable, mineral,

Steely-crag landscape

One tree standing tall.

Sycamore sentinel

Witness to almost two-

Thousand years' footfall

Past Hadrian's Wall.

Firebrands and fishwives

Would stir up old enmities,

Break up the Union

For politics’ sake.

Strong ideologies,

Silent majorities,

Haven’t we already

Made that mistake?

Leave or remain

Heard enough of this crap

Echoing down through the Sycamore Gap.
